The binding is generally rubbed with shallow loss to head of spine. Signed and inscribed on a blank leaf before the title page: "Mary Story / from her sincere friend / Washington Irving / London May 7th 1822." Books signed by Irving are rare, but especially with such an early inscription, and "The Sketch Book" is his most famous work. This volume includes "Rip Van Winkle."
