About This Item

London: John Murray, 1903. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 8.5" by 5.5". Not Stated. The first English language edition of the memoir of Leo Deutsch's time spent in exile in Siberia, a fascinating account complete with plates throughout. The first edition of this work in English, translated by Helen Chisholm. Leo Deutsch's account of his deportation to Siberia, after converting to Marxism and being arrested for smuggling Marxist literature into Russia. This is an interesting look at Russia at the turn of the century, just under a decade before another fraught revolution which saw the death of their monarchy. Illustrated with a frontispiece, and twenty-four plates.Collated, complete.Ink inscription and institutional label to the front paste down, presentation label from Charles Evans of Hereford to the Pontypridd Public Library to the recto of the front endpaper. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart. Light mark to the front board, a few lighter marks to the rear board and spine. Very minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Front hinge is starting but firm. Ink inscription and institutional label to the front paste down, presentation label to the recto of the front endpaper. Ink inscription and bookseller's label to the rear paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Institutional stamp to the recto and verso of the title page, and to some of the plates and pages of text. The occasional pencil note to the text. Very Good
