Recently rebound in half dark grey calf with hand marbled paper. Marbled edges. Plain buff end papers. Contemporary inscription on the flyleaf. Clean internally though with some age toning. Two vols. bound as one.

This is an exceedingly rare book of two volumes lovingly restored by Mr. Brian Cole. It is a treasure to view, feel and read. The book takes one intimately back to sunlit time. Nothing is known of Kate Crichton's early life. In 1849, she studied singing under Manuel Garcia at the Royal Academy of Music and in 1852 made her debut as Princess Isabella in Meyerbeer's opera Robert le Diable at the Drury Lane theatre. She followed this success with a trip to Milan where she caught a fever. Her voice never recovered and she was forced to give up her career. Based on her year in Italy, she wrote a novel Before the Dawn (1860). Late in life, her voice recovered enough to sing to her friends. She died in her eightieth year.

Life of Doctor Arnold (1844) authored by Arthur Penrhyn Stanley Thomas Arnold (13 June 1795 – 12 June 1842) was an English educator and historian. He was an early supporter of the Broad-Church Anglican movement. As headmaster of Rugby School from 1828 to 1841, he introduced several reforms that were widely copied by other noted public schools. His reforms redefined standards of masculinity and achievement. The Life of Doctor Arnold, published two years after his death by one of Arnold's former pupils, Arthur Penrhyn Stanley, is seen as one of the best works of its class in the language and added to his growing reputation. A popular life of Arnold by the novelist Emma Jane Guyton also appeared. In 1896 his bust was unveiled in Westminster Abbey alongside that of his son, Matthew. The Times asserted,… Read More

Matthew Arnold (24 December 1822 – 15 April 1888) was an English poet and cultural critic who worked as an inspector of schools. He was the son of Thomas Arnold, the celebrated headmaster of Rugby School, and brother to both Tom Arnold, literary professor, and William Delafield Arnold, novelist and colonial administrator. Matthew Arnold has been characterised as a sage writer, a type of writer who chastises and instructs the reader on contemporary social issues. He was also an inspector of schools for thirty-five years, and supported the concept of state-regulated secondary education.
