[San Francisco]: N.p., [ca. 1900. Six vintage photographs of San Francisco in wonderfully hand decorated and lettered mats, circa 1900, Images include 'Market Street near the corner of Geary", featuring the San Francisco Chronicle building, now the Ritz Carlton (8 x 9-1/2 inches); "Seal Rock" (9-1/2 x 7-1/4 inches); "A view from the hills" (5-1/2 x 91/2 inches); The bay ferry "Oakland" (5-1/2 x 91/2 inches); and a fishing fleet at the pier (6-1/2 x 9 inches); "Ship Portrait" titled "California Shipping" (4 x 6 inches). The photograph of the Chronicle building, also known as the De Young Building, shows the building with it's clock tower. The building was erected in 1889 and was the tallest building in San Francisco at the time. In 1905 a fire destroyed the 4 story clock tower on the building. That dates this group of photos a being shot somewhere in the years between 1890 and 1905. All matted on mounts 14 x 1 inches. In the View from the Hills photograph we find at the bottom a manuscript stanza from a poem by Charles F. Holder. The Seal Rock image has a sun spot in the middle. A charming assemblage.
