About This Item
New York: Random House, 1939. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. A collection of short stories about modern Spain and the effects of the Civil War on the Spanish people. Bates (1899-2000), an English-born writer, spent much of his early adulthood in Spain, traveling and doing odd jobs. When the Spanish Civil War began in 1936, he enlisted with the government forces and eventually made rank of political commissar. He helped to organize the International Brigade and later, he traveled to the United States to raise awareness of the plight of the Spanish Republic. Octavo. Original cloth binding, with gilt and black titles. Extremely faint stain to the bottom corner of the contents. Some mild browning and wear along the extremities of the dust jacket; otherwise a crisp, very good copy.
