A tall copy, pages 7 5/8" tall, all edges deckled and uncut. Very small old library discard stamp on each title, no other marks. Bound in late 20th century red morocco over very attractive marbled paper, with unusually thick boards (5/16"), and new endpapers. A fine set.

The cover of this book has much wear. A binding was added later as well as pads for the corner's of the book. the previous owners names are written on the inside of the front cover and on the top of the third blank page. The pages are yellowing and tanning. The edges of most of the pages are worn. Corners bumped and some minor edge wear. Some cracking of inner hinges, slightly cocked. Generally good + and nice & clean inside. This was published in lower numbers than the more common illustrated edition. Stated fourth edition inside, but this publisher (like others in Victorian Britain) often stamped later edition numbers on books to make it seem like the books were in high demand and selling out quickly. Wildly popular in Victorian times, the novel that introduced Svengali to the popular consciousness. Scarce.
