Hardcover. 352 pp. Fine in very good dust jacket with sunning to the spine, shallow chipping head of spine extending a bit onto the top front panel corner. A classic of Portuguese literature, first published in 1874, the powerful novel about a priest's seduction of a young and innocent girl. Considered a brilliant indictment of 19th century decadence and a corrupupt society minsitered to by a smug, hypocritical clergy, it is as well a moving story of human passion and human fallibility.
