Description:
1878. Weston, George M. [1816-1887]. The Silver Question. New York, I.S. Homans, 1878. xii, 293 pp. Original cloth, gilt title to spine. Fading, light shelf wear, very light toning, internally clean. Presentation inscription "Hon. Wm. M. Evarts With respects of The Author" to front endleaf. $100. * Weston wrote extensively on finance, monetary policy and slavery. Here, he discusses the reestablishment of a silver standard after its demonetization in favor of gold in 1873. This decision became controversial after the Panic of 1873 and the ensuing economic depression. He presented our copy to William M. Evarts [1818-1901], a prominent litigator and reformer who served as U.S. Attorney General under Andrew Johnson (whom he defended during Johnson's impeachment trial) and Secretary of State under Rutherford B. Hayes.
