About This Item

Considered the most powerful secretary of state in U.S. history by some (under Eisenhower, 1953 to 1959), this well-rounded diplomat also served as a delegate to the U.N. General Assembly, negotiator of the Japanese peace treaty, United States senator and more. Fine bold signature in blue ink on a heavy stock 5" X 3" card with his full name typed below. Near fine. Accompanied by an outstanding unsigned glossy news agency photograph, 9" X 7", showing Dulles seated at center with President Eisenhower at left and Governor Adlai Stevenson at right, with printed caption describing scene dated 2 October 1953 neatly affixed to verso: "Adlai Stevenson, defeated 1952 Democratic candidate for president, is shown (right) chatting with President Eisenhower (left) and Secretary of State John Foster Dulles when he called at the White House yesterday to report on his recent world tour. Mr. Stevenson visited most of the world's trouble spots during the seven-month tour." Also accompanied by an unsigned First Day Cover, 6½" X 3½", cancelled in Washington, DC on 6 December 1960 and with "First Day of Issue" stamped. Fine. 4-cent "John Foster Dulles" stamp at upper right and large ArtCraft pictorial cachet at left. Also present is a Typed Note Signed from his staff assistant D.E. Boster, 1p, 7" X 9", Washington, DC, 9 March 1959. Addressed to Warren A. Reeder Jr. Near fine. On "Office of the Secretary of State" letterhead, Boster thanks Reeder "for your kind message. It is heartening to the Secretary to know of your prayers for him and your good wishes for his early recovery." Dulles had had a colon cancer operation in 1956 and other health issues, and died at age 71 the month after this letter was written. With transmittal envelope.
