Joseph Vinoy [1803-1880] was a French soldier who joined the French army in 1823. He saw active service in the conquest of Algeria, the Crimean War and the Franco-Prussian War, rising in the ranks from sergeant to general. During the Siege of Paris, Vinoy commanded the Third Army operating on the south side of the City and took part in all the actions in that quarter. Appointed to the supreme command on Louis Jules Trochu's resignation, he negotiated France's surrender. He held important commands in the army of Versailles during the Paris Commune, occupying the burning Tuileries and the Louvre on May 23, 1871. He was subsequently made a Grand Chancellor of the Legion of Honor.
