About This Item

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.NFINE/NFINE.No owner inscrptn and no price-clip to dw/dj - absence of publisher's price - usually indicative of an export copy, which usually precedes the domestic first trade edns issue and distribution in the country of its origin, and sometimes, even worldwide.Bright, crisp, clean, glossy laminated, colour pictorial illustrated dw/dj,with brown+black lettering; with negligible shelf-wear or creasing to edges and corners - no nicks or tears present.Internally,to top edge of dw/dj from the head of spine/backstrip continuing to start of rear inner flap of dw/dj,an indeterminate fluid stain which has concomitantly affected the board's beneath with slight staining/ darkening.Another internal fluid stain to front inner flap's internal crease of dw/dj with the lowest 3" with slight bleeding to left and right of that internal fold. This bleeding has affected the corresponding spot to front board's front edge with slight bleaching/discolouration and also the corresponding spot to front internal endpaper similarly affected. The stains only partially visible externally,at head of dw/djs' spine/backstrip; and rear panel with critics' reviews has minimal scoring/indents but without penetration and without too adversely affecting the board beneath.Top+fore-edges generally bright and clean; contents otherwise bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - near pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners, appears unread - apart from my own collation. Bright,clean,sharp-cornered,publisher's original plain blue cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked silver gilt letters to spine/backstrip and clean - aforementioned fluid stain excepted - plain white endpapers.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,1-248pp [paginated] includes 15 chapters; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages,a dedication and acknowledgements to rear.Described hard but fairly and honestly - the major faults are the water/fluid staining to dw/dj and boards.Still a visibly attractive and acceptable collector's copy. Clarence Nathan Walker rules the air above New York City, one of an elite band of construction workers earning their kicks and high wages from the most dangerous job of all, walking the steel beams hundreds of feet above the street.Far below,a man called Treefrog haunts the tunnels that yawn underground like a city in themselves, rarely coming topside throughout one brutal winter of ice and snow. Between Clarence and Treefrog stretches a lifetime of experience, but in the space between the sky and the earth, their histories collide and a story unfolds. It is a story of love which begins with an accident so spectacular it becomes myth, and ends where it began,in a tunnel below the river. Daring and atmospheric, 'This Side of Brightness' spans over seventy years, from the days when men dug beneath the East River to build the subways of New York,to a time when those very tunnels became home to the city's lost and drifting. Time enough for one family to rise and fall, and rise again, their history inextricably linked to the history of the city, their stories full of hope and love and despair. With the unique magic of his words,Colum McCann has created a world within a world,a story rich with colour and sound and raw humanity.
