About This Item
Oxford: 'Printed by Daniel' [Daniel Press], 1893. First Edition. Hardcover. Oxford, 'Printed by Daniel' [Daniel Press], [1893] to 1894. Quarto, six parts bound as one, [vi] (cumulative preliminaries), xl (last three blank) (Book One), xlviii (Book Two), xlviii (last five blank) (Book Three), xlviii (last three blank) (Book Four), lii (Book Five), [viii] (index to the first lines and colophon with woodcut device) pages plus the original wrappers for all five books bound in, with the limitation in ink on the rear wrapper of each part. The preliminaries and index were printed separately in a sixth part comprising two sheets (without wrappers) intended to be bound in at the beginning and end of the volume, as here. Contemporary three-quarter brown morocco and marbled papered boards, lettered and ruled in gilt; top edge gilt, others uncut; covers a little rubbed and bumped; a few unobtrusive marks internally; pencilled ownership signature of Daniel C.A. Cave (almost certainly Daniel Charles Addington Cave, FSA); in excellent condition. Each part is number 92 of 150 copies printed. 'This work in six pieces, when put together, forms the most considerable publication of the Daniel Press, and is well printed and almost an édition de luxe ... A prospectus issued in November 1893 states that the first four books are reprints, but that the fifth consists of unpublished poems' (Madan: 'Daniel Press', page 113).
Madan 27, 28, 29, 31, 32 and 32*.
