About This Item

Philadelphia: By the author, 1793. Third edition. Top wrapper (original) only, though detached; some spotting. Uncut, some unopened. Signature of Robert Bolling on title. Fourth edition of Carey's eyewitness account of the great yellow fever epidemic which enveloped the city of Philadelphia in 1793. "In this little book, which passed through four editions in a few months, Carey left a graphic description of the great yellow fever epidemic in 1793. He gave a good clinical description of the disease, mentioning the efficacy and failure of many forms of treatment" (G&M). Carey's intention was, in addition to setting forth the facts relating to the disease, to satisfy the "anxious curiousity" of the citizenry. Included in this enlarged edition are David Rittenhouses' meteorological observations for August through November 1793 and a 42-page listing of those who died from August to December 1793. This edition has several issues, this being that of 164 pages, with the comma following "subject" on title, and the contents on the final printed leaf verso. It was first published 14 November, 1793, then again the 23rd, the 30th and this edition the 16 January 1794.
