Tokyo: Shaken, 1967. Hardcover. First edition, first printing. Very Good minus hardcover with light rubbing at the edges of the boards, a light bump to two tips, and blunting to the other two; interior clean and bright except for a small sticker abrasion to the bfep; lacking the rare vinyl dust-jacket. BOOKS SHIP THE NEXT BUSINESS DAY, WRAPPED IN PADDING, IN A BOX. Shomei Tomatsu's (1930-2012) deeply personal and intensely critical examination of contemporary Japanese national identity in light of the country's struggles following World War II and in the face of inexorable Westernization. This was the first publication issued by Shaken, Tomatsu's own imprint, and the first time the photographer had complete control over his book's content and design. Though many of the images had been previously published or exhibited, Tomatsu claimed to have 'recomposed' the work in the editing of the book, changing titles and themes. Photographs and afterword by Shomei Tomatsu; texts by Taroh Yamamoto and Takahiko Okada. Unpaginated [200 pages]; 148 full-page b&w gravure-printed plates; 7-3/4 x 8-7/8 inches. Text in Japanese. LAID-IN are three leaflets from the publisher on books of Tomatsu's work. Reference: Kaneko & Vartanian, Japanese Photobooks, p.94-101; Visions of Japan, p.207; Auer, 802 Photo Books, p.479. Due to size and weight, international and expedited shipping will be more than quoted.
