1838 1ed Shipwreck of Stirling Castle Australia James Fraser Voyages Illustrated

The Stirling Castle was a Scottish ship who is remembered for its fateful voyage where it wrecked near Queensland, Australia. Commanded by James Fraser, this ship was on an excursion toward Singapore where they ran aground on the reefs. Those that survived the wreck were taken into camps by local Aboriginal people of the Butchulla tribes.

'The Shipwreck of the Stirling Castle' is a rare account of the wreck and the events of the survivors. Written by John Curtis, this book describes the tortures endured by the survivors, including Fraser's wife Eliza. In addition to describing the wreck and the local tribes, Curtis describes the landscape of Australia and Amboyana Islands, account of 'kangaroo dogs' (dingo), influence of the British government and British missionaries in Australia, along with impressive full-page engravings depicting events of the voyage. One notable engraving is an illustration of Captain Fraser being stripped naked and speared.

1942 SUPERMAN 1ed Superhero Graphic Novel DC Comic Lowther Color Illustrated
"When Superman came out, it galvanized the entire industry. It's just part of the American scene. Superman is going to live forever."
― Jack Kirby, Comics Journal
Superman is one of the most popular fictional superheroes of all time, published by DC Comics. Superman appeared in various radio shows, newspaper comics, and eventually television and movie premiers. Because of his popularity, the name Superman has become synonymous with the American comic book. The book is the first novelization of a comic book character, and the first Superman story written by someone other than Jerry Siegel. It was Lowther who first provided many now-familiar details of Superman's birth and early life.
This 1942 first book edition by Random House features nine full-page illustrations with all 4 color illustrations.

1867 CIVIL WAR History Abbott Illustrated Slavery Abe Lincoln Battle Maps RARE

John S. C. Abbott' writing style "did much to popularize the reading of history."
– Dictionary of American Biography

"History of the Civil War in America" is an extremely useful account of the Civil War and was published in a time wherein it would have been read as news rather than history. Though well researched, the author makes use of colorful narrative style giving these more the feel of a popular account than a sober and authoritative text. Features events leading to the cause of the conflict through Lincoln's assassination in April of 1865 and with a final chapter on the results of the conflict as of the date of publication.

Filled with incredible illustrations of maps, portraits, and scenes.

1887 FOLIO Rime of Ancient Mariner Coleridge Gustave Dore & Paton Illustrated

Known as one of the English Lake Poets, Samuel Taylor Coleridge was one of the most notable 19th-century English romance poets. Coleridge's longest poem was 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'. This poem was one of the most important poems written at the end of the 18th-century, as it was known to begin the shift from the Romantic period into the Modern period of English poetry. It describes the sea voyages of a sailor who experienced dangers, adventures, and even supernatural encounters!

This huge 1887 edition is notable for including the illustrations of Gustave Dore and Joseph Noel Paton. In addition to the highly desirable art, this edition features commentary and critical notes by Alfred Trumble.

Description:
1680 RARE Franciscan Fortunat Hueber Solemnis Sublimis Bible Devotional Vellum

Fortunatus Hueber was a 17th-century German historian and confessor who was relatively unknown outside of Bavaria. Nevertheless, he wrote many treatises on Franciscan saints and foundations as well as devotionals and church histories. One of his lesser-known works was "Apparatus Solemnis Sublimis" – a devotional describing the character of Christ through signs, anecdotes and sayings of church fathers, and descriptions of ecclesiastical concepts and symbols. Each section or 'apparatus' of this book is based on a verse from scripture.

The decorative vellum binding on this 1680 first edition is particularly desirable, especially with the functioning leather and brass clasps.
