About This Item

London: Michael Joseph, 1938 . First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 7.5" by 5.5". None. The scarce first edition of this Horatio Hornblower novel by C. S. Forester. Chronologically this is the seventh Hornblower title, although it was the second the author completed. The scarce first standalone edition of this work. In the same year, it was also published in a much more common duology alongside 'Flying Colours'.Set in May 1810, seventeen years into the Napoleonic Wars, Captain Horatio Hornblower is newly in command of his first ship of the line, the HMS Sutherland, which he deems 'the ugliest and least desirable two-decker in the Navy List'.Two issues of the first edition of this novel were produced, the first in blue cloth, and the second in orange cloth. As this copy has been rebound, the issue is unclear. The leaves have been trimmed down by 6mm, not affecting the text. Mark Wilden, 26b.Retaining the original half title and advertisement leaf, but with endpapers renewed. Rebound in cloth, with endpapers renewed. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with fading to back strip and handling marks to boards. Light spotting to fore edge of text block. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright, but trimmed a little closely to the head. Very Good
