First edition, small 4to, (xvi), 64, 112, 121-168, 179-195, 188-189, 198-199, 192-193, 202-209, 230-438 pp, with considerable mispagination as called for. Lacking the portrait frontispiece. Contemporary calf, rebacked with red and green labels, corners restored. Hall was Bishop of Norwich as well as a popular writer, writing satirical verse while at Cambridge, religious polemics throughout his career and two short pieces of autobiography, the second of which, "Hard Measure", appeared here for the first time, covering some of the events leading up to the civil war. His plain style inspired Thomas Fuller to call him "our English Seneca." Wing H416.
