About This Item

London: Faber and Faber, 1992. Hardcover. near fine. 1st British Edition. xv, 517pp. Octavo. Navy cloth with gilt lettering and decoration on spine. Light wear to ends of spine. Clean, tight text block. There are a few small notes on the rear paste-down presumably from the previous owner refering to the text. In dust jacket, not price clipped, with only light wear to edges and some very mild chipping to ends of spine with one small closed tear. Placed loosely inside are two clean clipped articles relating to Hughes. A fantastic association copy. near fine Double Signed and Inscribed by the author. Signed by the author in black ink on half title and inscribed by the author in black ink on the title page. The inscription reads "For Patricia Kathleen, with my very best wishes from Ted, 12th August 1993". Edward James "Ted" Hughes (17 August 1930 Ñ 28 October 1998) was an English poet and children's writer. Critics routinely rank him as one of the best poets of his generation. Hughes was British Poet Laureate from 1984 until his death. This critical magnus opus looks at Shakespeare's use of the two most significant poems in the archaic world and argues that they later provided the template for the construction of every one of Shakespeare's plays. The inscription is written to Patricia Kathleen Page, commonly known as P. K. Page, who was a Canadian poet. She was the author of over 30 published books: of poetry, fiction, travel diaries, essays, children's books, and an autobiography. She was also known as a visual artist, who exhibited her work as P.K. Irwin at a number of venues in and out of Canada. Her works are in permanent collections of National Gallery of Canada and Art Gallery of Ontario. 1992
