"this book reproduces the quarto published probably without Shakespeare's authorization in 1609. Of that edition there were two issues differing only in the length of the imprint on the title page. There is no other authority for the text except for that of sonnets 138 and 144 which appeared in the "Passionate Pilgrim" ( 1599 and 1612). The second edition of the sonnets 1640 corrupts both the text and the arrangement of the poems.The errors of 1609 are corrected in the version edited by W.H. Hadow for the Tudor and Stuart Library,Vlarendon Press 1907. It is doubtful if all or any of a Lover's Complaint is the work of Shakespeare. The copy here reproduced is that in the British Museum. " This copy is VG in a RARE VG DJ.. The DJ is a glassine material with red printing on the cover and the UNCLIPPED price at the top of the inside cover ( 5s. net)...The DJ is intact except for a missing piece ( about 1/2") at the top of the spine. The book itself has some soiling to the outside, most noticeably where the piece of the DJ is missing.. The inside is unmarked, clear, and tightly bound...Deckled pages..Modest toning to inside covers and minimal, even toning to the text...SCARCE in Original, unclipped DJ.
