About This Item

Pennsylvania: Visionary Publishing Co.,, 1936. A fine copy First edition, first printing, of Lovecraft's scarce first book, with the dust jacket in fine condition. According to the publisher, "about 400 sets of sheets were printed, but half of these were destroyed. About 200 copies were bound and issued"; making this a very uncommon book in any condition. The present dust jacket is the unillustrated variant: an illustrated jacket was also issued with the first printing, and no priority has been established. This copy lacks the errata slip, and has seven blank pages bound in at the front; Currey calls for 16, but notes that the "binding and typography were wretched", suggesting variations were common (we have handled three copies with seven preliminary blanks, including the present example, and one copy with 14). Octavo. Original black cloth, spine and front cover lettered in silver, seven blanks at front, eight at the rear. With dust jacket. Frontispiece and 3 plates by Utpatel. A few trivial marks to jacket flaps, without price as issued: a fine copy in like dust jacket. Bleiler 1039; L. W. Currey, Cat 111 3603.

Synopsis

"The Shadow Over Innsmouth" is a novella by H. P. Lovecraft. Written in November-December 1931, the story was first published in April 1936; this was the only fiction of Lovecraft's published during his lifetime that did not appear in a periodical. The story describes a strange hybrid race, half-human and half an unknown creature that resembles a cross between a fish and a frog, that dwells in the seaside village of Innsmouth (formerly a large town, but lately fallen into disrepair).
