The author travelled extensively in the Oban District of Southern Nigeria and part of the Cameroons to study the Ekoi people as well as the natural history of the area. Included are chapters on religion, Egbo, Jujus, position of women, birth customs, divination, witchcraft, funeral ceremonies, war, government, folk-lore, etc, with detailed appendices on taboos, clubs, anthropometrics, orthography, grammar, vocabularies, botany, zoology, mineralogy, meteorology, geography. Work 109. 'He was one of the first generation of colonial servants who combined anthropological proficiency with administrative ability, and his several volumes are highly regarded' (Conover).
