(Oh, dear, the poor harassed deans!) The author went on to become a pioneering modern restaurant critic, and in light of the subject matter of this early work, her second book, I can't resist Wikipedia's observation that she "often employs sexual metaphors in describing food, both as a way to convey the intensity of the experience and because for her 'sex and food have always been deeply intertwined.'" And can I just say how much I love the dust jacket design on this book (alas, uncredited)? .
