Nürenburg: Lochner, 1690. Hardcover. Poor. This seventeenth century book on architectural columns covers 5 main types: Tuscana, Dorica, Ionica, Corinthia, and Composite (Being a blending of the Ionic and the Corinthian - upon the details of the high baroque edifice, as well their incorporation into domestic furnishings (Table, Armoire, Bed).
Folio, 12 1/4 in. x 8 in. Brown marbled boards, moderately scuffed with rubbing to extremities. Black cloth spine peeling away at top (1 in.) and bottom (3 in). Binding sound. pp. 3-4, 7-8, 11-32, 2 plates (titlepages) + 42 copperplate engravings. Missing first copperplate architectural titlepage, sign. A1, B1, and C1. Mis-pagination, pp 20 printed as 02 and pp. 29 printed as 92. Leaf A2 damaged, mounted on wove paper, missing approx. 1 1/2 in of text closest to outer margin. Wove paper covering verso side, but transparent enough to read text. Repair strip to outer edge of leaf B2, covering last few words of each sentence, but text readable through wove paper. Dampstaining to outer edge and corners of leaves C2-H2. Text readable throughout. Vertical crease to leaf C2.
Copperplate engravings by Wilhelm Pfann. Many plates printed as fold out plates, but since, cut into separate leaves and rebound. Large damp stains (mostly faint) to plates 11-17, 24-27, and 37-42. Occasional pencil sketches and notes on verso of plates, copying architectural elements. (VD17 12:650248K). The closest Google could squeeze out of the original (long!) German title was: "Seulen-Buch, Or: Fundamental Report of the Five Orders of Architectur-Art, like such by Marco Vitruvio, Jacobo Barrozzio, Hans Blumen, etc., and other famous master builders have been borne together and drafted into certain divisions, like also the related five termes so called, such as the same in right proportion and symmetry shall be rigged up and imitated.With additional beautiful capitals, extensions, pendants and parentes, amplified, decorated, and neatly furnished in drey theil. To all lovers who use the circles, lines and directions, as sculptors, mahler, carpenters, etc., and the like, for love and benefit, brought into this smooth format."
