London: Conservative and Unionist Central Office, 1948. 1st Edition. Paperback. Very good. First edition, only printing. This speech, from Churchill's period as Leader of the Opposition, calls for a new Parliament. "I had better make it clear that I am not making any proposal for a coalition government. The first step to national recovery. is to have a new Parliament. The Socialist planners have miscalculated and mismanaged everything they have touched. By their restrictions they make scarcity; and when scarcity comes they call for more restrictions to cure it. They keep the British bulldog running round after his own tail till he is dizzy and then wonder that he cannot keep the wolf from the door." Churchill would head opposition to the Labour Government until the General Election of 1951, which returned the Conservatives to majority and Churchill to the office of Prime Minister. This stapled paper pamphlet is bound in cream card wraps, numbers 8 pages, and measures 8.75 by 5.75 inches. The front cover has a pale grey-blue background and features a half-tone image of Churchill's head wearing a stern countenance. The speech text is subsequently collected in The Complete Speeches, Volume VII, p.7590, under the title "A New Parliament". Condition is very good. The stapled cream card wraps are complete, but with wear at the corners and light soiling along the edges. The binding staples remain firmly attached. The contents are crisp and bright with no spotting and no inscriptions, but there are two discreet vertical ink lines next to the text on p.5 marking passages of interest to a former reader. This speech was later reprinted in Winston S. Churchill: His Complete Speeches, Volume VII, p.7590 under the title "A New Parliament". Protected in a removable, archival mylar sleeve. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A235, Woods A120.

Description:
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1949. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Here is a full set of U.S. editions of Churchill's postwar speeches in the scarce dust jackets. These volumes span the period from immediately after the second World War, when Churchill was Leader of the Opposition, through the end of 1952, during his second Premiership. The events encompassed by these years are in many ways no less dramatic than those of the war years - the unraveling of the British Empire, the post-war recovery, the beginning of the Cold War, Soviet acquisition of the atomic bomb and U.S. invention of the hydrogen bomb. The U.S. postwar speeches were published in very small numbers, making jacketed U.S. editions much rarer than their British counterparts. Collectors should note that the U.S. postwar speeches are only four volumes, as the fifth and final volume, The Unwritten Alliance, had no U.S. edition. All four volumes offered here are in fine condition - clean, tight, and square with unfaded bindings, and… Read More

NOT FOR SALE." on the copyright page of each volume. In all other respects such copies are identical to normal first editions, including the $6.00 price on the dust jacket flap. Such presentation copies are quite scarce. (See Langworth p.319 for further details.) Here is Volume Two only. Condition is near-fine+ in a very good correct first printing dust jacket. The binding is clean, tight, and square with bright gilt and virtually no wear. The contents are pristine - crisp and bright with no spotting and no previous ownership markings. The book appears clearly unread. Even the untrimmed text block fore edge is bright and clean. Only very slight speckling of the unfaded red-stained top edge prevents this copy from being truly fine. Hulme, Keri: The Bone People. Louisiana State University Press, A tale of New Zealand. Stated United States First Edition, 1985. 450 pages, indexed. WINNER OF THE PEGASUS PRIZE FOR LITERATURE AND THE BOOKER PRIZE. Used. Very Good/Very Good unclipped original $17.95 dust jacket. Summary: "The Bone People, first published in 1984 by Spiral, New Zealand. About this book: The Bone People is an unusual story of love. It is unusual in the telling, the subject matter, and the form of love that the story depicts. This is in no way a romance; it is filled with violence, fear, and twisted emotions. At the story's core, however, are three people who struggle very hard to figure out what love is and how to find it. Hulme won New Zealand's Pegasus Prize for Literature (1984) for The Bone People. Then the book went on to win the prestigious Booker Prize (1985).
