John Ruskin (1819-1900) was hugely influential in the latter half of the 19th century and up to the First World War. After a period of relative decline, his reputation has steadily improved since the 1960s with the publication of numerous academic studies of his work. Today, his ideas and concerns are widely recognised as having anticipated interest in environmentalism, sustainability and craft. William Morris and C. R. Ashbee (of the Guild of Handicraft) were keen disciples, and through them Ruskin's legacy can be traced in the arts and crafts movement. A beautiful hand-made contemporary Arts and Crafts binding, by a world recognised bindery.. 5th or later Edition. Hardcover. Very Good.

Synopsis

John Ruskin’s Sesame and Lilies (1865) consists of two lectures, “Of Kings’ Treasuries” and “Of Queens' Gardens,” delivered in December 1864 at the town halls at Rusholme and Manchester. While these lectures emphasize the connections between nature, art and society, they are essentially concerned with education and ideal conduct. The first half of the original work, “Of Kings’ Treasuries,” is a critique of Victorian manhood. The second half, “Of Queens' Gardens,” counsels women to be moral guides and urges parents to educate them as such. Although Sesame and Lilies was widely popular in its time, the work in its entirety has been out of print since the early twentieth century.

About Camden Lock Books, ABA, IOBA.

My online bookselling is Camden Lock books. I own Camden Lock Books & list books that are uncommon, in demand and may be hard to find.

My book expertise came with four years as Chairman of London P.B.F.A. , many more years of exhibiting at monthly London Rare Book Fairs & owning my own bookshops continuously since 1984.

Every book here was valued by the person who first bought it and will be just as prized by the person who buys it now from my shopping website.

I am an accredited professional & a full member of the ABA, ILAB and the IOBA, "Setting the standard. The books you want...from booksellers you can trust".

You can meet me on my stand at Firsts 2024, London's Rare Book Fair, at the Saatchi Gallery, London SW3 4RY, 16-19 May 2024.
I also am joint owner of Burley Fisher Books , an independent bookshop offering new and secondhand books.
