First US edition in clean and unmarked tan linen w/black titles to spine, slight wear to lower corners and spine heel; tight, solid and square binding. Former owner name on paste-down. Internals in fine condition. The British first edition is Young 2576. This is the first novel by the nephew of W. Somerset Maugham. It was the basis of the 1963 Joseph Losey/Harold Pinter movie, with Dirk Bogarde and James Fox. 62 pages. 5.5 x 8.75 inches. 1949, Harcourt, Brace and Company, New York.
