London : J M Dent & Co, 1906 A very good copy of the fifth edition in this form: complete in 2 volumes, edited by R Brimley Johnson, with portrait frontispiece of Jane Austen, and 12 colour plates by C E Brock. The Brimley Johnson edition was first published in 1898 and was extremely popular, quickly running through a number of reprintings. In original decorative cloth bindings with gilt titles to spine and front board. The top page edges are gilt; the remaining edges are uncut. With half titles, showing that they were volumes I and II of Brimley Johnson's series; frontispieces; decorative title pages; listing of illustrations; and text with head and tailpieces. Original page markers present in both volumes. Volume I has a listing of Austen's novels together with a short biography. All the plates are present as called for and are tissue guarded. Vol I has 163 pp and Vol II has 218 pp. Both bindings are bright and clean with spines lightly cocked to the front. Vol I has a very small mark to the side edge of the front board and a small light mark to the back board. Vol II has a couple of small marks on the back board and a light bump to the bottom corner tip on the front board. Contents to both volumes bright and clean in near fine condition. Pencil signatures to verso of feps.
