Lawrence, Kansas, USA: University Press of Kansas, 1972. BF2 - A hard cover first edition withdrawn ex-library book in very good- condition. A tight, clean, sound copy in brown cloth with white lettering and graphics on the spine with very minor overall shelf wear plus there is some very light tape staining on the outside board surfaces and front and back endpapers from where the dust jacket was taped down to the boards plus there are the usual library stamps, marks, label, and pocket on the top outside paper edges, front and back endpapers, title page, copyright page, and dedication page plus there is a donation bookplate on the front endpaper plus there is the word "discard" in large letters in green marker on the front endpaper. The dust jacket shows only very minor overall shelf wear plus there is the usuall library label on the spine plus it is still in the original library mylar sleeve. A biography of a US senator from Kansas who served from 1873 to 1891. He is notable as a picturesque and striking figure. He migrated to Kansas in 1858 and quickly entered into politics playing an important part in the state Constitutional Convention and its first state letislature. Much of his reputation is based on both his literary talents and his brilliance as a political opponent. He favored high protective tariffs, pensions, African-American civil rights, free silver, and the regulation of trusts. He opposed prohibition, women's suffrage, Democrats in general, and President Cleveland in particular. Endnotes, bibliography, indexed, 201p.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Ex-Library.
