About This Item
New York: Grove Press, Inc.,, 1957. The publisher's copy, inscribed by the author First edition, first printing, limited issue, number 42 of 50 copies signed by the author. This copy is additionally inscribed by H.D. "Kusnacht Zurich, March 17 1957", with the ownership inscription of the publisher on the front free endpaper, "Publisher's copy, Barney Rosset, Grove Press". It contains many of H.D.'s most-loved poems, including "Sea Rose", "Sea Poppies", and "Orchard". This is inscribed from a Swiss clinic where the septuagenarian H.D. was recovering from a broken hip. She had previously spent time at the clinic in 1946, when she broke with reality and believed that a third world war had begun. This time, she spent her slow recovery continuing her esoteric researches and becoming involved in the lives of her patients, as well as writing "End to Torment", "Sagesse", "Winter Love", and "Hermetic Definition", all published under the title Hermetic Definition in 1972. A trade edition of 1,250 copies was issued simultaneously on 5 September 1957. Octavo. Original brown cloth-backed grey boards, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, publisher's imprint on front cover in grey and pink. Spine and edges slightly sunned, contents a little toned: a near-fine copy. Boughn A25a.i.
