About This Item

Item is in GOOD Condition. It has some shelf wear, expected for a vintage book. The pages inside are in very good shape with no highlighting, marks, or writing; no dog-earing or bent pages. ( There is a blacked-out name on the inside first page). There is no dust cover. The grey boards are in acceptable shape with no scratches or tears; minimal to no fraying along the edges, but there is a bit more wear on the bottom edges and foot and crown of the spine from shelf rubbing. There is an ancient round cup stain on the front, long since faded and dried, and some age spots, but these are not obtrusive and blend in with the background. They do not go through the board. The spine binding is tight, no loose pages, and in good shape (please see pictures as they are part of the description). Overall in good condition. This edition, which was published by Modern Library in 1924 with an introduction by Conrad Aiken, is one of the first editions to gather Dickinson's poems together in one volume, based on an earlier 1890 edition. Synopsis

Emily Dickinson (1830 - 1886) was an eccentric, reclusive poet, though born to a family of good standing within their Massachusetts community. She had fewer than a dozen poems published in her lifetime, though posthumously her sister found a cache of nearly eighteen hundred, all of which have now been published. Emily's style was broke with the common forms of poetry at the time, and foreshadowed what was to come. Her work was harshly criticized when first published, but she is now considered one of the American greats.
