Alice Meynell (18471922) was a celebrated poet, prolific essayist and committed suffragist. 'W. M.' was her husband, the publisher and editor, Wilfred Meynell. Their youngest son, Francis, ran the Nonesuch Press with his wife, Vera, and David Garnett. The Press was set up to produce books according to a 'triple ideal: significance of subject, beauty of format and moderation of price.' (cited in Dreyfus).
