About This Item
京都. [Kyoto].: 福井書店. [Fukui Shoten].. Meiji 27 [1894]. Late Meji sugoroku game sheet, colour woodblock print, 50 x 70cm, some light bleeding of colour from the border along part of the lower edge, a number of small holes in the image, creasing particularly at folds, chipped in places along the margins. Still a large and attractive image. This rare sugoroku game sheet was published in December 1894, just in time for the New Year celebrations of 1895. At that time, Japan was exerting strong pressure on China in Korea and the Liaodong Peninsula, which included Port Arthur and Mukden.
The game commences at the Headquarters in Tokyo and progresses through Korea and China. The main theme revolves around Japan's role in protecting Korea and its people from China, while showcasing Japan's military prowess on land and at sea. Each panel features an illustration and interpretation of a war incident. Interestingly, the game also covers the involvement of military nurses who were dispatched to Korea, as well as the Red Cross activities taking place on the home front. The ultimate objective is to achieve a triumphant parade at home, adorned with national flags and the rising sun symbol. .
