Vilna: Y. R. Rom, 1855. Hardcover. Later boards. 8vo. 416 pages, 23 cm. In Hebrew and Judeo-German. Title translates to "Debts of the Heart. " Originally written by Pakuda in Arabic in 1040. The work was translated by ibn Tibbon between the years of 1161-1180. Bahya ben Joseph ibn Paquda was a Jewish philosopher and rabbi who lived at Zaragoza, Al-Andalus (now Spain) in the first half of the eleventh century. He is often referred to as Rabbeinu Bachya (Wikipedia, 2018) . This work was profoundly important to the study of ethics by the Misnagdim opponents of Hasidism (YIVO, 2018) . SUBJECTS: Jewish ethics -- Early works to 1800. OCLC lists 5 copies worldwide (JTS, HUC, UMass, QBPL, Bryn Mawr) . Ex-library with usual markings. Very light damp stains throughout.
