About This Item

Shogakukan Square, Japan, 2015 Book. Very Good. Soft cover. Japanese and English text.; Paperback. 23 x 30 cm; 0.9 Kg; 240 pages with colour illustrations.; Used with minor signs of wear. Interior in very good condition.; Catalogue from the exhibition Seductive Smiles: Masterpieces of ukiyo-e paintings from the Weston Collection held at Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts (April 14 to June 15, 2015), Hokusai Museum (July 11 to October 13, 2015) and the Ueno Royal Museum (November 20, 2015 to 17 January 2016).; "This exhibition presents 129 works from the Weston collection: paintings by more than fifty artists, including Hishikawa Moronobu, Miyagawa Choschun, Katsukawa Shunsho, Kitagawa Utamaro, Utagawa Toyokuni, Katsushika Hokusai, and Kawanabe Kyosai. It provides a systematic introduction to the world of ukiyo-e paintings from the early seventeenth through the late nineteenth century. Many are bijinga, paintings of beautiful women; the result is a bevy of women who have spared no expense on their clothing and hair styles. While enjoying the changes in fashions and in the facial types deemed beautiful, visitors can savor the delicacy and precision possible only in brush-drawn paintings: the hair, depicted in ultra fine strokes, the shading on the eyebrowns and lips, the limbs visible through sheer garments." excerpt from the introduction..
