Oxford University Press: NY. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1951. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Scarce first state book club edition. Book is very good, Former owner name penned on front fly. Pictorial boards are lightly rubbed. Half title page has offset from long gone paper item. First issue points for the book: First thus ed. Title page states: NEW YORK OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS 1951 Copyright page states at bottom: Copyright 1950, 1951 by Rachel L. Carson Printed in the United States of America, by H. Wolff, New York. The boards are matted not later state glossy. Book is 8 3/8 inches tall; straight cut page edges. The pictorial boards were easily rubbed and damaged and were not acceptable to Carson. These dull board, reviewer copies are the first state of this ed. Oxford University Press had all remaining copies of the 1st printing rebound in a glossy “plasticized” paper over the boards. The boards were still pictorial and mimicked the dust jacket. The second state of the 1st printing is characterized by these highly glossy boards (print run unknown) ". Very good jacket, second state with two reviews on bottom of front flap (Thor Heyerdahi and New York Times). Moderate wear to edges/folds and rub.
