About This Item

New York: E.P. Dutton, 1949. First Edition. . Hardcover. Very Good. An early mystery-thriller by Brown, who learned his craft writing for the mystery and sci-fi pulps and whose work fostererd a fan cult that continues a half-century after his death. When Brown is good, he is very, very good and "The Screaming Mimi" is one of those. An Irish, alcoholic newspaper reporter in Chicago is so affected by the beauty of the fourth victim of a serial killer that he sobers up enough to begin his own hunt for the killer. As he gets close to his goal, he finds himself the target of madness and death. The book became the basis for a 1958 movie starring Anita Eckberg and Gypsy Rose Lee. This copy is a Dutton's book club, "Guilt Edged Mystery," First Edition Thus. 248 pages in bright yellow cloth boards showing slightly bumped corners and light surface wear. Text shows a bit of age-tanning and light foxing on the end papers and edges, o/w boards and text are clean and unmarked, binding tight and square. Sorry, no dustjacket. Makes a very decent reading copy of one of Brown's classic stories.
