About This Item
Beirut: Published By Van Gulik, 1958. Front cover has two blemishes, stain from now-missing small label at top and a small brown stain near bottom at free-edge. Otherwise quite clean throughout. Van Gulik translated this rather obscure treatise, "A Chinese Treatise on Scrolls and Forgers, Shu-Hua-Shuo-Ling", written by Lu Shih-hua, an 18th century collector who devoted his life to the collecting of antique books and pictures. The "Scrapbook" is presented in complete translation, together with an introduction, notes, and a reprint of the Chinese text. Errata sheet at the conclusion with one typed addition glued in. Robert Van Gulik (1910-1967) was a Dutch diplomat, orientalist, musician, and writer best known for his Judge Dee mysteries. He was stationed in Beirut, Lebanon during the 1958 Civil War, thus the place of publication. A reprint edition was published in Thailand by Orchid Press in 2006. 84 +16 pages. . First Edition.. Tan Wrappers. Light Edge Wear.. Thin Octavo.
