Cambridge: MacMillan, 1859. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Doyle, Richard (frontispiece by). John Masefield's copy presented by him to, presuambly close friend and house guest. Inscribed on the ffe "For Ilka/ from/ Constance and John Masefield/ 22nd August 1955" Laid-in is an ANS on letterhead of Burcote Brook, Masefield's home near Abingdon, to same Ilka tahnksing her for a letter and expressing anticipation of her visit. (Also laid in are directions on Burcote Brooke notepaper in a differnt hand, presumably Ilka's). Publisher's blue cloth, pictorially gilt-stamped on front cover and spine, aeg. Spine soiled, extremities worn, binding a wee shaken, a few leaves lightly foxed.

That description probably suggests what an odd book it is. Travel writing has long relied on techniques of the novel, including elaborate description, dialogue, narrative, and substantial quotation from earlier writers who've visited the same locations, and so there's no obvious reason why Hughes chose the form of a novel to relate his experience involving the Valley of the White Horse in Berkshire.
