Garden City, New York: Doubleday & Company, Inc, 1950. A handsome copy of the first printing. PHOTOS UPON REQUEST. Near Fine condition in a Very Good+ dust jacket. The jacket is protected by a removable Gaylord clear-plastic sleeve. NOT price clipped ($3.00). NOT a library discard. Previous owner's tiny address label. Newspaper clipping ["Scottsboro Case Defendant Freed," Lansing State Journal, July 14, 1950) tipped to the front pastedown endpaper. The clipping is hidden beneath the jacket's front inner flap. First printing, with "First Edition" so stated, and no other impressions indicated. Pages are clean, crisp and unmarked. Autobiographical account of Black American Haywood Patterson's arrest for rape, trial, harrowing impisonment at an Alabama prison farm and in Alabama jails, jungle law of survival, sex life of the prisoners, failed escape attempts, and thrilling details of his ultimately successful escape. Patterson was one of the nine black boys falsely accused of raping two white prostitutes and sentenced to life imprisonment. An important early case in the Civil Rights movement. Bound in the original biege cloth, stamped in black. Complete with terrific full color illustrated dust jacket, signed "Reisie" in the plate. Portraits of the authors, with their biogaphical notes on the jacket's rear panel.. First Edition (so stated). Hardcover. Near Fine condition/Very Good+ dust jacket.
