London, England / Edinburgh, Scotland: A. Fullarton & C. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Uncommon in the trade in this state and condition, a still good-looking, structurally sound set, complete in eight volumes, bound handsomely in red cloth, gilt lettering and illustrations to spines, covers, and with black-stamped ruling, lettering, and vignettes to covers both front and rear, quite involved, featuring armorial bearings, staffs, pennants, banners, and gilt portrait of presumably a Sir, Lord, General (or Author). Scuffing to spine heads and feet, tips, edges, penned inscriptions at top tips of first free endpapers of a few volumes, but clean interiors. New endpapers bound in, with new headbands, and with publisher's multi-page Prospectus bound in at rear of Volume I, Division 1 and inside final volume. Double-columned texts, and tipped in are several score fabric samples exemplifying Highlands tartans, tissue-protected, which have led to slight bleed-through here and there and with considerable ensuing waviness to endpapers. 208 pp. + Prospectus to Volume I. Frontis black-and-white steel engraving of Loch Schiel, "with monument on spot where Prince Charles Edward first raised his standard." Tartan samples of Forbes, Maclean, Argyle Campbell, and Stuart, each tissue-protected. Volume II, Division 2: 209-416 pp., with tartans of clans Robertson and Menzies, with additional fine engravings and illustrations hors-text, as throughout the other volumes. Volume III, Division 3: 417-608 pp., with additional fine engravings, tissue-protected, and with tartans of clans Macdougall Sutherland Or, Mackinnon, and Macneill, also tissue-protected. Volume IV, Division 4, featuring a truly fine engraving of the Great Marquis of Montrose and Castle Urquhart, Loch Ness, also tissue-protected, and tartans of clans Fraser and Munro, with 609-776 pp., then [1], xiv-xxxvi pp., comprising John Wilson's, "An Essay on Highland Scenery." Volume V, Division 5, [1], 2-192 pp., with tartans of Macdonald and Breadalbane-Campbell, Macgregor and Chisholm, also tissue-protected. Volume VI, Division 6, with a fine black-and-white engraving of Lord Clyde, Loch Schiel again, and with 193-384 pp. Volume VII, Division 7, 385-592 pp., with a fine frontis collage of four black-and-white engravings of the busts of John, Earl of Crawford, Sir John Macdonald, Sir Duncan A. Cameron, and Sir George Murray, a duotone facsimile reproduction of the Cathedral Dunkeld, with tartans of Macintyre, Macleod, Mackenzie and Mackintosh, 71st and 78th regiments, and a fine engraved map of Crimea. Volume VIII, Division 8, with two frontis pages of engraved black-and-white busts of more Earls and Sirs and Generals, tissue-protected, with tartans of Macnab and Macnaughton, and Macpherson, Full Dress, 593-818 pp., xii pp. of publisher prospectus again.
