UK: Mainstream Publishing, 1988. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 1.9 x 21 x 27.9 cm. Scottish Garden Buildings explores the neglected and unknown structures of historic Scots, gardens and estates. With the encouragement of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings and the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland the author investigated examples of the estate buildings which were once associated with Country Houses and their gardens all over Scotland. Revealed were a wealth of decorative and useful buildings which, at their best, exhibit an alluring combination of charm, dexterity and attention to whimsical detail. The curious nature and uncertain future then facing many of these unusual structues encouraged him to supplement his fieldwork with academic research. Thus we have Pineapple houses, early fish farms, walled gardens, orangeries and ice houses. We also have mausolea, gatelodges, obelisks, grottos, summerhouses and other structures often the testing ground of a new idea by a celebrated architect as a monument to vanity or eccentricity.
