A scarce first edition copy of this exceptional example of lithography, depicting the antiquities of Scotland, particularly scarce being complete and in the original publisher's paper covered boards. The first edition of the work. Scarce. Collated complete with forty eight engraved plates; additional engraved title page depicting Fingal's Cave and tail piece depicting David Hume's monument. Rebacked in quarter morocco with the exceptionally scarce original publisher's boards preserved. This charming work is copiously illustrated, offering a scenic description of nineteenth century Scotland's antiquities, cities towns and picturesque scenery. The work contains engravings of abbeys, castles, public buildings, battle grounds, harbours and landscapes John Claude Nattes made drawings of the scenes, with the etchings by James Fittler. James Fittler was an English engraver of portraits and landscapes, appointed by King George III to be his marine engraver. Rebacked in quarter morocco with the exceptionally scarce original publisher's boards preserved. Externally very smart with bumping to the extremities. Marks to the boards. Damp staining to rear board. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with offsetting from tissue guards to text. The occasional tidemark, occasionally affecting the extremity of the plates. Loss to the extremity of plate twelve depicting Glasgow Infirmary. The occasional spot. The occasional handling mark.
