This issue with a look at an improved mountain railway system that uses a hydraulic elevator to lift rail cars from one station to the next on a mountain; an article on the dangers of electricity in wires; a look at two inventions improving on dynamo telegraphy, etc. GOOD condition. Large dampstain along the left side affecting all pages throughout. Horizontal fold crease present. Offsetting along the sides of the magazine. Minor soiling. Owner's signatures on the upper front cover.

This issue with a look at the Thorne Typesetting Machine; a short history of the electric telegraph; a new water velocipede (like a bicycle on pontoons); an article on a new bicycle path at Ocean Parkway in Brooklyn, accompanied by a photo; a short piece on an electric man (it could haul a cart around the city of Tonawanda) invented by Philip Perew; an article heralding the bicycle era, etc. GOOD condition. Horizontal fold crease present. Minor soiling and staining, with some curling and creasing to the journal.

New York: Munn and Co, 1881. Wraps. Good. Illustrated wraps. Tabloid format. 14 pp. Black and white illustrations throughout. Single issue of this long running journal devoted to science. This issue with a lengthy illustrated article on the photophone invented by Alexander Graham Bell. Invented in late 1880, the device used light beams to transmit sound. While not used extensively during his lifetime due to the rise of radio, it served as a precursor to fiberoptic communications. Also present in this issue is a shorter article on a road engine invented by Curtis Warrington. It used illuminating gas as fuel, powering a vehicle that could travel up to 18 miles per hour. GOOD condition. Large dampstain along the left side affecting all pages throughout. Horizontal fold crease present. Heavy toning to the rear page. Some tearing along the hinge of the front cover. Minor soiling. Owner's signatures on the upper front cover.

Heavy wear and "dusty" feeling. The leather is dried out, and the front hinge is cracked but still attached: FAIR PLUS/Acceptable. The contents are still nice, with nifty old woodcut illustrations. This was the beginning of the golden age of American mechanical ingenuity, and the pages are full of interesting inventions, many amazing gizmos of all kinds. 414pp. Includes a helpful index to the whole volume.
