Washington: Printed by A. and G. Way, 1803. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Fair. Octavo. Variously paginated. Bound volume containing the reports of the first 15 councils, dating from 1803 to 1818. Bound in early full sheep. The leather binding is quite worn and dry and is scuffed and abraded. The hinges are sturdy. Lacks the top leather label on the spine; the bottom label reads, "Vol. I / From the / 1st to 15th Council / Inclusive." Early owner's name at the headcap of the spine is illegible, and no names within. The binding is designs with rules of alternating oval and diamond designs in blind about the edges. There is some pest damage to the outside edges of the text block towards the rear of the book, not affecting the text. Text is toned and foxed with some damping at the front and rear. Hardcover bound in 19th century brown quarter leather with brown publisher's cloth over boards. The binding is rubbed and bumped but sound. There is a small dent on the fore edge of the front cover. Hinges are a little rubbed but are sturdy. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. Private owner's small square bookplate on the front pastedown has an interlocking "C.H.W." The motto around the edges is, "Fortitier Molire Confidenter Opperire." (Translation from the Latin is "Strive Strongly to Wait Confidently"). Text is toned but is generally clean. Contains two fold-out engravings and three foldout tables as well as 9 examples of printed title pages from different works. Text in French. Intended as a printer's manual, this wasthe "first great European manual to give us a complete and detailed introduction to the operations of the printing press." (G. Barber). A decent copy. Rare.

The white cloth spine is foxed and the spine is toned and the spine gilt a bit dulled. A sound copy with secure hinges. Text is clean. Illustrated throughout with black and white photos. Signed on the back side of the frontis by William Lanier Hunt. William Lanier Hunt (1906-1996) was the "Dean of Southern Horticulture." He donated land along the Morgan Creek in southern Orange County, NC to the North Carolina Botanical Garden and is now known as the Hunt Arboretum.

Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
