[1929]. viii, pp321-640, with 31 plates in full colour by L R Brightwell, 272 drawings in black and white by the same artist and 712 photographic plates and other illustrations. In red cloth-covered boards, decorated with blind rules, gilt titles on spine. Tall 4to. A large and heavy volume which may incur an additional charge for overseas delivery. Boards slightly rubbed and rounded at corners and spine tips, spine a little faded. Some faint and occasional spotting on endpapers, else internally neat, clean, bright and tight. H G Well's classic work on biology, written with his zoologist son and his former biology tutor has been described as 'the best popular introduction to the biological sciences'. It is notable for its introduction of modern ecological concepts. Originally serialised in 31 fortnightly parts, the first book edition of three volumes was published between 1929 and 1930; a single volume edition was issued in 1931.
