About This Item

UK,8vo HB+protected dw/dj,1st edn.VG+/VG+.No owner inscrptn but there does appear that a previous owner bookplate has been removed from the ffe; leaving some glue residue and a couple of tiny red ink,but no price-clip to dw/dj.There are no other marks or stamps to indicate it as an ex-library copy.Protected colour pictorial dw/dj with no wear or tear or creasing.Top+fore-edges slightly toned as usual/normal with contents bright, tight and clean with a dog-ear crease [tut-tut!!] to top of pp9/10.Blue paper-covered boards with stamped gilt letters to spine/backstrip with a black ink printed list of previous titles on front paste-down and blue ink pictorial decorated rear endpapers.UK,8vo HB+protected dw/dj,1st edn,3-244pp includes b/w line illus throughout the text,by John S. Goodall who also designed the dw/dj and endpapers. For many years,Dorothy Watson and Agnes Fogerty have taught in the school at Thrush Green, and when the time comes for their retirement there is general regret.Who will take Miss Watson's place as head teacher? As for replacing gentle little Miss Fogerty as kindly custodian of the infant's class,it seems impossible to imagine anyone doing the job as competently as she has done for so many years.Further speculation arises when it is found that the school house is to be sold.Winnie Bailey's brilliant but eccentric nephew Richard thinks it might prove suitable for his young family. Neighbours view this possibility with some misgivings. But as well as the retiring teachers' immediate problems, including a stray cat befriended by Agnes and discouraged by Dorothy,Thrush Green and Lulling have other topics of concern. Will the Misses Lovelock keep their latest domestic help? Is the young man outside The Fuschia Bush really an architectural student,as Agnes thinks? More important still, will the two teachers ever find a suitable retirement home at Barton-on-Sea? All these matters are discussed and finally resolved in these pages where old and new friends settle down together very happily.Miss Read's vivid descriptions of life in and around Thrush Green will again delight and enthral her many devoted readers who will welcome another visit to this charming Cotswold village.
John Strickland Goodall(b.1908).Works as John S.Goodall or J. S. Goodall.Born Heacham,Norfolk, son of a heart specialist. Leaving Harrow School,he worked in the studios of Sir Arthur Cope RA and E.Watson Nicol under whom he 'was taught with loving care to be a mid-Victorian art student'.He also studied under Harold Speed and at the Royal Academy Schools (c1930.). Served in the Royal Norfolk Regiment (1939-46).Concentrated on line drawing in the 1930's,began painting in watercolours while stationed in India at the end of WW2.Since which, his extensive travels (e.g. twice around the world in a cargo boat) provided him with many landscape subjects;he also paints conversation pieces and late 19thC pastiches in watercolour and gouache. As an illustrator he works in b/w (sometimes in silhouette) and full-colour,turning his 'Victorian' early training to good account in evocative period tableaux. In his wordless picture books he has evolved an effective method of telling stories by means of half-pages placed between each double-page spread.
