The First Part of the Guide covers primary works on intelligence organizations and activities arranged in nine sections : I National Intelligence Establishments; II Collection of Information (includes many case histories of clandestine operations dating from the sixteenth century through the period after World War II); III Research and Analysis ; IV Counterintelligence; V Covert Action (concentrates on the American attempts to support foreign governments or leaders in Chile, Cuba, Iran, and Vietnam); VI Subversion (covers Communist and Nazi secret political penetrations throughout the world); VII Intelligence Support lists titles describing administrative and technical support required for the conduct of intelligence activities; VIII Legal and Moral Considerations; IX Criticisms and Exposes. The Second Part, grouped into thirteen diverse intelligence-related topics, lists books and articles dealing with events or subjects that contain illuminating material relevant to one or more of the intelligence functions that are described in the First Part. Some of the prime topics are assassinations, international crime (including smuggling and narcotics trade), escape and evasion, political dissent, psychological warfare, and unconventional warfare. The activities of terrorists, guerrillas, mercenaries, and revolutionary movements without foreign sponsorship are included. In addition, the Second Part contains histories of most of the conventional wars and warfare dating, in general, from the American Revolution to the date of publication.
