About This Item

v xvi, 1 85 pp. [10 x 13¼ inches] oblong quarto in attractive stiff blue wraps. A facsimile of Mozart's autograph manuscript of The Impresario in the Mary Flagler Cary Music Collection, The Pierpont Morgan Library. Der Schauspieldirektor (The Impresario) A Comedy with Music in One Act, K. 486. Preface by Charles Ryskamp, Director; Introduction by J. Rigbie Turner. Additionally, radiographs of watermarks and the composer's drafts and sketches in front matter. Fine. Multiple copies available. Technically not an opera but a "singspiel," The Impressario is essentially a play, preceded by an overture and interrupted by four arias. It was first performed on February 7, 1786, in a musical competition in the Schonbrunn Palace, sponsored by Joseph II. Mozart's singspiel competed directly with none other than Antonio Salieri's one-act, Prima la Musica e Poi le Parole (First the Music and Then the Words).
