About This Item

Leipsig / London / New York: Karl Baedeker, 1903. Twelfth Remodeled Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Very Good+/Very Good-. Wagner & Debes. 16mo. Pp. lxiv, 563. Illustrated with 30 maps and 39 plans, several in colors and/or folding out. Index. Publisher's textured red cloth over flexible boards, titles stamped in gilt on the cover and spine, blind stamped decorations, red silk bookmark ribbon, edges marbled, publisher's advertising on front endpaper, railway map on back endpapers. In the original kraft paper dust jacket with titles printed in black on a mounted kraft label. Remarkably well preserved, with cover edges very lightly rubbed, fold-out pages mildly age toned and a two-inch closed tear to the first one, outer leaves lightly foxed. Jacket edges rubbed, spine ends and corners chipped, rear flap nearly detached, short closed tears to back panel. The dust jacket has performed it's job efficiently, revealing a binding of bright cloth and reflective gilt. The first version of this travel guide was published in the late 1860s. This volume, the first of three on Italy, corresponds to the sixteenth German edition, with a historical sketch of Italian art by Professor Anton Springer and descriptions of paintings drawn from John Ruskin and others.

Carefully researched and frequently updated, with contributions from travelers, Baedeker's pocket guides were essential baggage for the savvy tourist. The thoroughness with which they describe a country now affords an informed glimpse of the place, the people and their customs at a specific time in history. The clear and beautiful lithographed maps, plans and panoramas created by the firm of Eduard Wagner & Ernst Debes were unequalled. Indispensable for researchers, a treat for armchair historians, and prized by collectors.

The scarce dust jacket is preserved in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
