[SLAVERY] [MACAULAY, Zachary]. The Slave Colonies of Great Britain or a Picture of Negro Slavery Drawn by the Colonies Themselves: Being an Abstract of the Various Papers Recently Laid Before Parliament on That Subject. Second Edition Corrected (and the earliest available edition). London: Hatchard and Son Piccadilly, printed by Ellerton and Henderson, 1826. Octavo, approximately 5" x 8" inches. 124 pages. An extremely scarce title: Not a single copy of this 1826 edition held at any libraries worldwide, according to OCLC Worldcat. Additionally, there are no earlier editions listed on OCLC Worldcat. Macaulay assembles a fascinating review of the attempts throughout the British colonies to reform the slave codes, both by colonists themselves and by Royal Decree. The "progress of colonial reform" is charted by first hand accounts from the colonies; each progressive law is heavily footnoted to contextualize the actual affect of such efforts in the Bahamas, Antigua, Barbadoes, and more. Includes errata and two pages of ads. The bottom of pages 7/8 are clipped at the footnote, but a facsimile has been laid in. No covers, library stamps to a few pages. Generally clean. In good condition overall. Extremely scarce title.
